Our story.
It started behind a cocktail bar.
From mixing drinks to mixing scents.
Straight out of uni, Gavin was bartending at a cocktail bar.
He got hooked on the mixing. How a few drops of one thing changes the whole drink.
So he started blending at home. Not just drinks, but scents and flavours too, for friends and family.
They kept asking for more. He kept going, through COVID and beyond. In 2021 it became Balmain Body, and the first bottles sold at the Glebe market.

Roz joined this year.
He’s always been one of Gavin’s more put-together mates. Good behind a camera, and good at sorting out problems.
What we only found out later: he’s got a seriously good nose. He can pick single ingredients out of a blend, which comes in very handy when we’re chasing a scent.
When the spare room ran out.
For a long time Balmain Body ran out of a spare bedroom at Gavin’s parents’ place.
He and his partner packed orders late at night, after his full-time job. Often until midnight.
The boxes lived at his sister’s, stacked to the ceiling in one of her rooms.
One night, packing in the spare room, it was obvious. No space, too many orders. Time to pick one or the other. So we moved into our own warehouse in Marrickville.
We make the whole thing ourselves.
Most fragrance brands order their scent from a lab overseas, put their name on the bottle and wait for the pallet to land.
We don’t. Every Balmain Body scent is blended, bottled and packed at our own place in Marrickville, Sydney.
Every bottle gets looked at by hand before it moves on. Then it sits for a month so the scent settles.
Small batches, so someone actually sees every bottle.

When we started, we got plenty of criticism, and plenty of good feedback.
Every time we change something, it’s because of what you told us.
Been with us since the early days? You’ll have noticed a lot has changed. Lately the feedback keeps getting better, which is the whole point.
A year from now we’ll look different again. It’s always to be better.
